Back-to-Work Clothes Closet
When I was naked, you clothed me for my job interview ...

Lack of business clothing is one reason the unemployed and homeless can't become self-supporting. Dale Bennett and Ellie Waltemade have seen this at the new Oak Park/River Forest Walk-In Ministry, and the vestry has agreed to see if St. Christopher's can help the poor overcome this obstacle to independence.

The downstairs coat closet is being underutilized because many people prefer to keep their coats upstairs with them. If volunteers are willing, we propose to use part of the closet as an interview clothing closet for the Walk-In Ministry. There will still be room in the closet for those who prefer to hang their wraps downstairs. Because space is limited, we will ask people to store gently used and cleaned business clothes at home until more clothing of a particular size is needed.

Here's what we need to make it happen:

  • A volunteer to organize the closet;
  • A group to clean the closet and make it a more useful place for both interview clothes and Sunday wraps;
  • Volunteers to help us get appropriate interview clothing by:
    1. Posting signs asking for donations;
    2. Checking dry cleaners to see if they will give us unclaimed clothing for this purpose;
    3. People willing to spread the news to fiends and neighbors that we need clean, pressed clothing in good condition, all sizes, for men and women;
    4. People willing to maintain the closet.

Annual Outreach Activities:

Through the work of the Social Concerns Committe, the parish undertakes a variety of fundraising and ministries that exclusively benefit area charities and churches, not St. Christopher’s. The most prominent activities include:

Festival of Lessons and Carols: This festival incorporates our music ministry with outreach. Each year, a local charity or social service agency is chosen to be the recipient of the proceeds of the free-will offering that is collected at this Advent service.

Food Pantry:Non-parishable items are needed for the The Oak Park Food Pantry which serves more than 200 monthly. Demand increases in the summer when contributions decline. Especially needed: tuna, baby food, diapers and paper goods. We have two containers for donations: a basket in Ahlborn Hall by the kitchen and a wooden box unter the table near the chruch entracne. Questions? Call Ellie Waltemade.

Foyers Groups: These groups are an excellent way to enter our community and to get to know people in a relaxed setting. Each group gathers generally once a month, either Friday or Saturday, for dinner, lunch dessert and/or coffee in a home or occasional restaurant, depending on the decision of the participants. Contact the church office for more information.
